Pagan Death Cult

Posted on June 21, 2008. Filed under: Activism, Christian Right |

I recently got a forwarded email warning me of the terrible consequences of removing 10 Commandments memorials from public spaces.  A group called Faith and Action sent out the appeal.
The reader is warned that if we don’t act, tiny religious minorities might be placed on equal par with Christianity in the public square.
A “pagan death [...]

Canada Apologizes. Will the U.S.?

Posted on June 11, 2008. Filed under: History, Native Americans |

Today, the government of Canada officially apologized for the treatment of Native Americans (in Canada they are called First Nations), particularly the government-sponsored and usually church-run boarding schools. See the Globe and Mail’s article here.
Tragically, the US has not taken similar steps.
Delegates to the Mennonite Church USA passed a resolution supporting an apology. You can read [...]

Posted on June 9, 2008. Filed under: Activism |

My question:  how [...]

A Must-See Film

Posted on June 1, 2008. Filed under: Iraq, movies |

Moyers’ Journal interviewed the filmmakers of Body of War this week.  It tells the extraordinary (though not unique) story of Tomas Young, US soldier wounded in Iraq.

Hopefully this film gets into lots of theaters.  Even if it doesn’t, here are two ways to get at least part of a moving story.    Here is the film’s [...]

Mars Phoenix Probe Has Landed

Posted on June 1, 2008. Filed under: Astronomy |

One of my interests is astronomy.  I love to see the beyond-Earth parts of God’s creation.  The successful soft landing of the Phoenix probe last weekend was the beginning of the exploration of the Mars’ polar region.  This extraordinary photo (click on it to enlarge) was taken by an orbiting probe.  It captures the Phoenix [...]
