$650,000,000,000

Posted on July 29, 2008. Filed under: Economics, Iraq |

As of late summer 2008, Congress has approved spending about $650 billion on the Iraq War. About $3 billion more is being added to that total each week.
How much money is $650,000,000,000? How much is even one billion?
How long does it take for a billion seconds to pass? There are 86,400 seconds in a day. [...]

Blocking the Blockade Resolution

Posted on July 28, 2008. Filed under: Activism, Iran |

This post is an update on H. Con. Res. 362.  A month ago I told you about this resolution working its way through the House that would set up a blockade of Iran.  If enacted, this provocation could easily produce more war, higher gas prices and more terrorism.
Through Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), I have [...]

2000 Days of Hell

Posted on July 27, 2008. Filed under: Activism, Iraq |

By my calculation, September 10th will be the 2000th day of the US occupation of Iraq.
About 1 million Iraqis killed.  (This is twice the number Saddam snuffed out during his reign of terror.)  Several million have become refugees.  Untold number injured both physically and spiritually.
About $650 Billion squandered, and still counting.   Over 4,100 Americans killed, [...]

Continuous Harassment

Posted on July 27, 2008. Filed under: Israel/Palestine |

Israeli settlers continue to harass Palestinian citizens in their own villages.  Of course, the settlements themselves are illegal.  Here is an incident that took place this week:

On Friday 25 July at 10:30 a.m., three Israeli settlers, one masked and accompanied [...]

Gas Price Prediction

Posted on July 20, 2008. Filed under: Oil |

Since my last post, I traveled to Ohio and Indiana.  We saw unleaded regular at $4.49/gal. on the Indiana Toll Road.
This week the price of oil fell more than any other week in history.  It is still sky high though at about $128.50.
Now many commentators are predicting the price of gas will decline, some at [...]

Shock Doctrine Video

Posted on July 8, 2008. Filed under: Economics |

Do you ever wonder, where is the outrage at the war in Iraq?  Why do so many people believe the myth that 911 and Saddam were somehow linked?  And where is the outcry over the official sanctioning of torture?
Naomi Klein’s book The Shock Doctrine is one I plan to read.  Having read her short pieces, [...]

Preventing History from Repeating

Posted on July 1, 2008. Filed under: Activism, Iran |

The US House of Representatives is currently considering a bill (H. Con. Res. 362) that might push the US-Iran confrontation over the edge.
H.CON.RES 362 already has (as of 6/29) 169 co-sponsors. This resolution calls on the president to stop all shipments of refined petroleum products from reaching Iran. It also “demands” that the President impose [...]
