Bail Out America, all 304 Million of Us
Here’s an alternative to the bailouts that haven’t done much yet: instead of bailing out AIG, GM, etc., how about bailing out the USA?
Take that $700 Billion, or another $700 Billion, (we can handle both right?) and write a check to each and every American.
It would be about $2,300 per person. Each couple gets $4,600. My household of five would get a little over $11,500.
What would you do with that kind of cash? Think of the possibilities. Some would be terribly responsible and pay down debt. Most would go on a spending spree, right? That would stimulate the economy.
But, that is only a short-sighted response. We could use some home improvements. For $7,000 we could install new windows, saving us a bundle of energy costs. That’s the real twofer: create some jobs and reduce energy bills, freeing up more income for other uses.
Some would invest in those cheap stocks, which would actually put some upward pressure on Wall Street, if I remember my supply and demand correctly.
Many, I’m convinced, would use some of the extra money to aid those who are suffering in an economy that is “falling off a cliff” according to Robert Reich.
Call me simplistic, but that sounds like a better stimulus package than forking money over to CEOs and bankers who’ve shown how terrible they are at stewardship.
