How to Save $1 Trillion; and Democracy Too

Posted on August 14, 2009. Filed under: Activism, Economics, History |

By Jeff Hackman August 14, 2009 With six weeks left in Fiscal Year 09, it looks like the Federal budget deficit will be about $1.7 or $1.8 Trillion (what’s a hundred billion to us anyway?). This monstrous number that numbs the brain is over four times the previous worst-ever deficit. Some debate who’s responsible for [...]

Two Bills for the Bankers

Posted on April 9, 2009. Filed under: Economics, History |

The economic meltdown is hard to understand–take it from an economics teacher. But, I found another teacher who helps me with it.  Bill Moyers interviewed Bill Black on his show recently.   This is the place to find it out.  And, more importantly explore some possible solutions. If the above link doesn’t work, simply search in [...]

Farewell to W

Posted on January 19, 2009. Filed under: History, Iraq |

By Jeff Hackman January 19, 2009 Today is the last full day of the George W. Bush administration. Even though there is still about 24 hours left, it is time to add up the damage. The myth of redemptive violence has had a field day with Bush. The tragic loss of 3000 Americans on 911 [...]

Canada Apologizes. Will the U.S.?

Posted on June 11, 2008. Filed under: History, Native Americans |

Today, the government of Canada officially apologized for the treatment of Native Americans (in Canada they are called First Nations), particularly the government-sponsored and usually church-run boarding schools. See the Globe and Mail’s article here. Tragically, the US has not taken similar steps.  Delegates to the Mennonite Church USA passed a resolution supporting an apology. You [...]

COs in Government: Ted Sorensen

Posted on June 3, 2008. Filed under: Activism, History |

The Boston Globe has an article today on Ted Sorensen, speechwriter for JFK who was a pacifist.  The article can be read here.  Apparently he was instrumental in Kennedy’s commencement speech at American University.  This speech hinted at a world beyond the Cold War, a world of co-existence with the USSR.  Fascinating stuff. My question:  [...]
